This week on our Employee Spotlight we'd like to introduce Nick Tameling. Nick is on our Support Services team with our Managed Services group. Read on to learn a little bit more about Nick and what he's up to in and out of the office!
How long have you been working for Springthrough?
I’ve at Springthrough for 7 months now, it’s been a wonderful experience!
Tell us something your teammates don’t know about you.
Although I work in the tech field, I’m a huge country guy. I practically live in the woods on my time off!
What is your favorite local restaurant / bar?
I’m a huge fan of Two-Beards Deli, I can’t get enough of those sandwiches! Great, now I’m hungry.
When you were younger, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I’m pretty sure I recall that I wanted to be a race car. Not a race car driver, an actual racecar. Looking back, I’m glad this isn’t possible. Yet.
What is one thing you cannot live without?
Definitely my family, my wife is my number 1 fan, and always keeps me moving forward. There’s nothing better than putting in a hard day’s work and going home to my 7 month old son happy to see me!
If you could meet a famous person alive or dead, who would that be?
I’d would have loved to sit down and paint with Bob Ross. I’m a terrible artist, but I’m sure he would have told me my mistakes were just happy little accidents.
How did you get into IT/ Software development?
My dad started working in the technology field when I was growing up, I was fascinated with the detective work that’s behind fixing a computer. Each problem solved feels like a case that’s been cracked, even password resets.
What is the (technology, architecture, or tech stack) that you like to use the most and why?
I’m starting to enjoy understanding and maintaining a proper backup structure. Retaining data and quickly restoring it is extremely important in case of an emergency. At Springthrough we follow the 3-2-1 rule, which means having at least 3 total copies of your data, 2 of which are local but on different devices and at least 1 copy offsite. This ensures data retention even if the main storage area is completely destroyed!
What is your favorite Springthrough memory?
The pinball tournament we recently had was a lot of fun and a great way to get to know my teammates better.
What is the most interesting job you’ve ever had that was not IT/ Software development related?
I worked for a small CNC manufacturing company that specialized in making turbochargers for racing boats… I guess that’s IT related! Oh well.
What is the best place you’ve ever traveled to?
It’s not very far, but anywhere I can throw a tent down in northern Michigan is my go to place.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
If it’s not working, turn it off and on again.
